Roy Maxion will give three lectures focusing broadly on different aspects of an increasingly important topic: reproducibility. Reproducibility tests the reliability of an experimental result and is one of the foundations of the entire scientific enterprise. We often hear that certain foods are good for you, and a few years later we learn that they're not. A series of results in cancer research was examined to see if they were reproducible. A startling number of them - 47 out of 53 - were not. Matters of reproducibility are now cropping up in computer science, and given the importance of computing in the world, it's essential that our own results are reproducible -- perhaps especially the ones based on complex models or data sets, and artificial intelligence or machine learning. This lecture series will expose attendees to several issues in ensuring reproducibility, with the goal of teaching students (and others) some of the crucial aspects of making their own science reproducible. Hint: it goes much farther than merely making your data available to the public.

Knowledge-based methods in life sciences

In my research I aim to understand how formalized knowledge bases can be used to systematically structure and integrate biological knowledge, and how to utilize these formalized knowledge bases as background knowledge to improve scientific discovery in biology and biomedicine. To achieve these aims, I develop methods for representing, integrating, and analyzing data and knowledge with the specific aim to make the combination of data and formalized knowledge accessible to data analytics and machine learning in bioinformatics. Biomedicine, and life sciences in general, are an ideal domain for knowledge-driven data analysis methods due to the large number of formal knowledge bases that have been developed to capture the broad, diverse, and heterogeneous data and knowledge.

Situational Awareness and Decision-Making Support for Crowd Management in Mina, A Grand Challenge Project Funded by the Ministry of Education

Recent real disastrous crowd incidents have shown that crowded places can be exposed to significant safety dangers and that the presence of many pedestrians can potentially result in injuries and fatalities at large scales if not planned and managed reasonably. This fact has resulted in significant challenges for managing the safety of large volumes of pedestrians in dense areas. In retrospect, many such real crowd disasters could have been avoided with better crowd management. Better tools and methodologies to predict crowd behavior during planning for potential emergencies would enable authorities to plan and prepare for improved public safety in crowded environments. Better still, real-time management of crowds might avert disasters if live event data could be used to make rapid predictions of crowd dynamics over the immediate future, allowing management to be optimized as an event unfolds. Such tools do not yet exist, and the technical demands of creating them are not trivial; they will require innovative approaches to both empirical research and modeling.

Sakhaa Al-Saedi: We conduct a systematic genetic analysis of risk variants related to increasing the severity of COVID-19. It leads to a better understanding of its genetic basis and identifies the host genes to be targeted to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce its death toll. Azza Althagafi: We developed DeepSVP, a computational method to prioritize structural variants involved in genetic diseases by combining genomic and gene functions information. DeepSVP significantly improves the success rate of finding causative variants in several benchmarks and can identify novel pathogenic structural variants in consanguineous families.

Yasser AlThuwaini is an undergraduate student at The George Washington University, USA. He is pursuing a Mechanical Engineering B.S. with a focus on Robotics. Yasser joined the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems Lab (SENTRY) led by Professor Charalambos (Harrys) Konstantinou as a KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) student. Yasser’s double minors in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering, along with his interest in Computer Science, allowed him to take a multidisciplinary approach in his work.

Hadeel is an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech, USA. She is pursuing a computer science B.S. degree minoring in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). She joined the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems Lab (SENTRY) led by Professor Charalambos (Harrys) Konstantinou as a Saudi Summer Internship (SSI) student. Hadeel is interested in cybersecurity and machine learning which allowed to enhance both her knowledge and experience in the uses and applications of different fields of computer science.

Elisa Chiapponi

I am currently a PhD student in Digital Security enrolled in the Sorbonne Université. I work on my research project at EURECOM and Amadeus, under the supervision of prof. Marc Dacier at KAUST My areas of interest include Network and Web security. My thesis focuses on the analysis and mitigation of the new generation of botnets, in particular the ones performing web scraping. My goal is to find practical means to defeat them. The starting point of my project is understanding the ecosystem of scraping bots. This consists of identifying the actors behind this business and their motivations

Ali Alfarhan is an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. He is studying computer science with a minor in game design. Ali joined the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems Lab (SENTRY) led by Professor Charalambos (Harrys) Konstantinou as a KAUST Gifted Student Program (KGSP) student, with interest in cybersecurity and optimization.
